Montefiascone
High above Lake Bolsena lies Montefiascone, a place where nature, history, and wine have blended for centuries. Born from the fire of a volcano, the village became world-famous thanks to the legend of “Est! Est!! Est!!!” Between the Rocca dei Papi and the golden vineyards, you can feel the magic of times gone by. Montefiascone is a true Italian winemaking treasure—rich in pleasure, soul, and history.
A place between sky, earth, and wine
Montefiascone sits atop the hills of Lazio. Overlooking Europe’s largest volcanic lake, Lake Bolsena, it’s a place where nature and culture have intersected for centuries.
A lake born from fire
About 300,000 years ago, a volcanic eruption created Lake Bolsena. Its mineral-rich soils lend freshness and elegance to the Montefiascone vineyards. This ancient harmony of fire, water, earth, and sky is reflected in every glass of wine.
The Legend of Defuk
Montefiascone became famous thanks to the story of the German bishop Johannes Fugger von Heiligreich (Defuk), on a pilgrimage to Rome in the 12th century. His servant marked the best taverns with the word “Est!” In Montefiascone, he enthusiastically wrote three times: Est! Est!! Est!!!. Defuk stopped, drank—and died there. His tomb in the church of San Flaviano still commemorates the wine that made Montefiascone world-famous.
The Pope's Fortress – The Bishops' Summer Residence
In the 14th and 15th centuries, the Rocca dei Papi served as the summer residence of bishops and popes. From here, they governed the region, escaping the heat of Rome and overlooking the surrounding vineyards. Even today, the fortress is a symbol of power, faith, and culture.
Montefiascone today
Today, Montefiascone embodies all these qualities: the allure of a landscape born of fire, the legend of Defuk, traces of ecclesiastical power, and the vitality of a centuries-old winemaking culture. Anyone sipping a glass of white wine at sunset, overlooking the lake, understands why Montefiascone is one of Italy’s winemaking treasures.
